8 Biggest Casting Mistakes In Upcoming Movies
5. Hayden Rolence As Nemo - Finding Dory
Pixar's always been great at amassing great voice casts for its animated marvels and, as the company makes the move into franchising, they've proven equally adept at getting those big names back. And so Finding Dory will prove to be a pretty extensive reunion of the Finding Nemo lot; Ellen DeGeneres as Dory, Albert Brooks as Marlin, Bob Peterson as Mr. Ray, Andrew Stanton as Crush, Willem Dafoe as Gill, Vicki Lewis as Deb (and Flo).
There's one name missing there though, and it's a big 'un; Nemo himself. Because he's now 21, Alexander Gould has been replaced at the lucky-finned clownfish by Hayden Rolence. Now I'm sure Rolence will be great - Pixar's got a lot of experience with child actors - but that's not the problem; its what his casting represents for the film that's the issue.
Whereas Toy Story progressed in real time, Nemo 2 appears to be picking up not long after the ocean-spanning quest of the first, meaning Nemo needs to be played by someone whose voice hasn't broken. Finding Dory has always been a somewhat questionable prospect, especially as director Andrew Stanton has admitted it's been pushed by those further up the chain, but sticking so close to the status quo of the original doesn't make this seem like it'll be a self-standing follow-on.
Sure, we don't need a movie where Nemo goes to college (a la Toy Story 3 and Monsters University) and the dual meaning of "Finding" becomes a pot-headed observation, but some progression would have been nice.
