The Criticism: Nolan may be able to craft visually striking images and narratively grand plots, but there's one thing that people all seem to think is lacking from his movies; a sense of emotional engagement. His movies are treated as cold pieces that technically impress but don't stir anything more. The Defence: This is probably the most waylaid element of any criticism of Christopher Nolan. As said earlier, the haunted man is a Nolan archetype and its inclusion immediately lends each of his movies a decidedly human protagonist. But beyond that, the sense of loss ties into the plot; each of his films not only contains an emotional centre, but is actually driven by it. Inception is the pinnacle of this, delivering an emotionally wrought journey is an incredibly visually creative manner. Dom Cobb struggles will the loss of his wife, something he blames on himself, and enters into the plot in an attempt to move on from that. The final shot, which left audiences the world over on the edge of their seats, remains such a potent talking point not because of whether the top falls of not, but because of its implications on the whole outcome of his journey; does he actually get to be with his kids at the end?
