8 Classic Problems With Batman And Superman Movies Warner Bros. Are Repeating With The DCEU
4. The Death Of The Waynes
Batman is haunted by his parents' deaths. That's a defining character trait for Bruce Wayne, but is also sadly true of the movies; the first film from each of Burton, Schumacher, Nolan and Snyder were all obsessed with the legacy of Joe Chill/Jack Napier, and while they all eventually moved on from it to a degree (Returns doesn't focus on it, Schumacher actually has Bruce move on from it, Nolan has Rachel as important an influence, Snyder hopefully will have learnt his lesson and drop it for Justice League), crime alley still rears its ugly head whenever Warner hit the reboot button.
The inclusion in Batman V Superman is particularly inexplicable. Yes, Snyder tries to make it as palatable as possible, framing it as the opening credits and tying it into the main plot in a new (if very dumb) way, but it's incredibly played out by now and doesn't really feel at home in this film - given how he's gone past traditional Batman morals and worked through at least one Robin, Batfleck should have advanced as a character.
Now I can somewhat understand a trepidation about presenting a character without an origin in our origin-story driven landscape, but this is Batman - his is the origin story. It's unnecessary and keeps the character locked in that "first few years of crimefighting" mindset, halting development into something else interesting.
