Wes Craven's New Nightmare is the meta accompaniment to the A Nightmare on Elm Street series, seeing actor Heather Langenkamp and the filmmakers of the franchise caught up in Freddy Krueger's return: but not as we know it. With the events of the Nightmare movies leaking into our world, director Wes Craven himself reveals that the films were a cage for a mysterious entity that is now trying to break into reality and freely destroy innocence, taking on the form of Freddy as its preferred vehicle to do so.

In essence, the Freddy we see on screen isn't the quit-witted dream demon played by Robert Englund, but something unknowable and indefeasible that has long been drawn to Freddy's role in cinema. It's simply wearing his burned and bloodied skin to do its horrible bidding.
