8 Easy Steps To Make The Next Friday The 13th Great

6. Characters We Care About

Friday the 13th The Final Chapter
Paramount Pictures

While 'character' is not something that generally ranks very high up on a slasher producer's priority list, it certainly should be. Numerous times throughout the franchise, we have been given dynamic protagonists for Jason to hunt down. Not only have these been wise character choices but they also elevate the entire affair.

Easily the best example of this is the character of Tommy Jarvis who was introduced in the fourth film, going on to also appear in the fifth and sixth. By the time we reached the third outing with Tommy, he was a fully-fleshed out character who proved to be the Van Helsing to Jason's Dracula.

But it certainly does not take three films to build an interesting character. An aspect any new Friday film should focus on is giving us a core group of protagonistic characters who are well-developed and who we actually care about. Too often, films of this nature seem to see their characters as mere lambs to be slaughtered and have no interest in giving them anything more than a passing thought.

Fully-realized characters with believable and relatable motivations make for a smarter film and an even greater showdown with our resident hockey fan.
