8 Euro Trash Movies That Really Scrape The Barrel

1. Cannibal Terror (1981)

Notable for being a non-Italian entry to the cannibal sub genre (This little atrocity is French) Cannibal Terror is a thoroughly inept film in every single way. It takes your standard cannibal plot and executes it so poorly I have had more joyous moments staring at a box of Tampax than watching this movie. The 'natives' in the film are clearly European men - they have Western hair dos and beer bellies. Half the time, they cannot contain their mirth at the proceedings - p*ssing themselves laughing during the cannibal ritual 'dancing'. There is no way this film was ever set in a jungle. The action takes place on a mowed lawn with cars and a road clearly visible in the background. Plus the bodies that are being disembowelled are clearly pig carcasses with clothes thrown on. There are Euro Trash movies that are diabolically bad and they are either terribly funny or just plain awful. Cannibal Terror is intent on scraping every last molecule out of the barrel. It is that insulting to the viewer's intelligence. How it ended up on the Video Nasty list is astonishing - are our moral guardians really that easily duped? For years people tried to pin the movie on Jess Franco, but in reality it is sillier than even Franco's worst excesses. Pin the blame on Alain Deruelle and Julio Tabernero. Shame!

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
