8 Even More Forgotten Films From The 80’s You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

6. My Science Project (1985)

My Science Project Now this film truly baffles me with its non-existence. Although another one of my favourite childhood movies and still a regular feature on my television screen from time to time, it was critically panned upon release and was a pretty substantial flop, receiving widespread ridicule and bad reviews. Why, I have no idea. As this is a great science fiction film that I personally consider a classic and a must have. It stars John Stockwell (Christine, Top Gun) as a teenage car enthusiast who raids an old air force test site (now a plane graveyard) in the hopes of finding something to pass off as his science project so as to not flunk out of school. He stumbles across the engine of a UFO captured in the 40's that can bend space and time. Unfortunately it is malfunctioning and acts as a gateway to other dimensions and our protagonist and his friends must find a way to stop it before the world becomes "cosmic dust." Featuring 80's mainstay Fisher Stevens (modern audiences may know him from the series Lost) and a memorable performance from legendary actor Dennis Hopper in a supporting role as a hippie teacher channeling his iconic character from Easy Rider, My Science Project is a fun little feature that everyone of all ages can enjoy. And in my opinion far superior than some of the sci fi rubbish out there, which is why I simply don't understand where the hate for this movie comes from. I think this flick may have suffered from the fate of being released in the same period as that other time travelling film from the same year, Back to the Future. A lot of critics tended to compare the two when in fact aside from the time travel element, they are really nothing alike. This is more like an episode of the Twilight Zone or Amazing Stories (Remember that show?). Which is funny when you think about it as the whole film does have an early Spielberg-esque feel to it. This is another reason as to why My Science Project should be re-visited and re-evaluated by all, because it truly deserves its rightful place alongside classic movies from that era. Plus it features what could quite possibly be the greatest movie line of all time.

Passions in life: Movies, Music and Wrestling....My childhood was spent growing up in the "Outback" of Australia (I'm a little bit country) and my adulthood resided within the city limits (I'm a little bit rock and roll), so you could say that I am the best (or worst) of both worlds. A 6 foot 7 ex wannabe pro wrestler (whose career was cut short due to a busted back, NOT caused by wrestling) & muso who has a precocious cat & a habit of doing the wrong thing but for the right reasons. The story of my life???? All demos, no albums ;)
