8 Exciting Upcoming Comic Book Movies You Need To Know About (That Aren’t Marvel Or DC)
1. Mouse Guard
The Comic: Mouse Guard looks rather odd, and that's because it is. Set in a medieval-era world of sentient mice, the comics follow a collection of rodents known as the Mouse Guard, whose job is to protect other civilian mice in any way they can.
This includes defending them from predators, keeping an eye on the weather, and acting as escorts should the need arise. Written and illustrated by David Petersen, Mouse Guard started in 2006 and has been turned into a role-playing game, as well as having its own action figures.
The Movie: In what might be the most surprising combination of filmmaker and material you'll hear all year, War For The Planet Of The Apes and The Batman director Matt Reeves was attached to Mouse Guard as a producer in 2016, along with writer Gary Whitta (Rogue One).
The plan is for the film to utilize the same motion-capture tech that Reeves used in his Apes movies (plus some of the techniques Disney used for their live-action Jungle Book remake) to bring Mouse Guard to life.
On the director front, Maze Runner's Wes Ball reportedly came onboard last year. That's good news, because the first and third Maze Runner movies are surprisingly good. The second is a bit of a boring dud, but if the trilogy had better scripts, the Maze Runner films could have been among the best action/sci-films of the year. Ball directs the material confidently, handling his action sequences with finesse and carrying a solid eye for thrills.
With Ball, Reeves and Whitta behind this, Mouse Guard - unbelievably - could be one of the most touching, thrilling comic-book movies we'll soon get to see. Let's just hope it isn't too cheesy.
