8 Exciting Upcoming Comic Book Movies You Need To Know About (That Aren’t Marvel Or DC)

2. Revival

Jim Carrey Aleister Arcane
Image Comics

The Comic: One of the more recent comics series on this list, Revival is set in a world where the dead are returning to life. The main plot follows detective Dana Cypress as she investigates the murder of her sister - who has since been "revived" along with many others - while struggling to navigate a society that's slowly falling apart.

There are shades of The Walking Dead and The Last Of Us within Revival (the revived people aren't zombies, but they turn violent at times), and the three properties share a bleak, drama-heavy tone with lashings of blood and gore throughout. There are ghostly creatures lurking in the woods too, giving the comic an extra supernatural edge.

The Movie: A live-action film adaptation was announced in April 2017, co-written by Tim Seeley - creator of the comic - and Sarah Fischer. First-time feature director Luke Boyce will be at the helm, and indie studio Shatterglass Films will produce.

A proof-of-concept teaser trailer also made its way online, showcasing the grim vibe the movie will be aiming for:

It's unclear what status the film is currently at, but when it was first announced, production was expected to begin in early 2018. At the time, Boyce emphasised his passion for the property and his wish to see it through, so expect Revival to make it to the screen in the near future.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
