8 Fascinating Disney Movies That Were Never Made
3. Musicana
Fantasia remains one of the most unique Disney films ever made, consisting of eight sections each of which are set to pieces of classic music conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Even though the film was met with a mixed critical reception upon initial release, it has gone on to secure a massive cult following and even received a sequel in 1999 titled Fantasia 2000.
Yet a sequel to Fantasia was a possibility as early as the 1970s. The film was to be titled Musicana, and was to focus on world music. This time, each of the various animated sections would be set in different countries, showing off the music native to those cultures.
These planned sequences included a jazz sequence, a South American sequence featuring heavy use of Aztec and Incan mythology and a “Rain God” sequence set in Africa. There was also music from Finland and an animated version of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. In the end, the project was deemed not commercially viable and scrapped, but some of its concepts made it into Fantasia 2000.
