8 Films Disowned By Their Directors Before They Were Released

6. Supernova (2000)

Keanu Reeves Exposed
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Ho boy, where to start with this one? Supernova is (apparently) a science-fiction horror, but if you were to watch the trailer for the film you might instead assume it's some kind of... space rom-com? I feel confident in saying it may be one of the worst trailers ever seen.

The project went through four different directors before filming finished, starting with Geoffrey Wright in 1997 and ending with Ford Francis Coppola in 1999. Whilst Wright quit before filming even began, Jack Sholder came on-board to re-shoot what the second director, Walter Hill, had started.

Eventually, when both Sholder's and Hill's cuts of the film failed to impress the producers, Coppola was brought on to finish the job and provide a final edit of the film. Coppola, you know the guy who directed The Godfather, struggled to work the film into anything even remotely decent and it subsequently released to terrible, awful reviews.

In the end, none of the three of the directors that actually worked on the film ended up receiving a directorial credit. As the name Alan Smithee had become too recognizable by the time the film was released, the studio instead opted for the name "Thomas Lee".
