8 Films Where Not Giving A F**k Improved Everything
7. Fast & Furious 5
How do you revive a franchise that has done everything possible with its chosen topic? You completely change the genre, that's how. This is exactly what Fast and Furious 5 did in 2011. Instead of focusing on street racing, Fast and Furious 5 instead got the gang back together to stage a heist, with the car element this time getting used for the getaway. Unashamedly, the fifth part in the series is a big, loud action film, with plenty of huge setpieces and genuinely good fight scenes. This part also, in a clear "Oh, what the hell!" moment, they bring in a new team of law enforcement chasing our heroes with its leader played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Seriously, if you want to make a franchise even more successful, just bring in The Rock and it will happen. Justin Lin was intelligent to know that the series probably couldn't sustain itself for much longer by just being about cars, so began using the cars to support the action, knowing that having them feature heavily in the plot was a way for the series to retain its roots. This film also introduced a heavily serialised nature, setting up the following films with end-credits sequences and sequel hooks, which continued into Fast 6 and will continue with Fast 7. Thanks to changing its genre, there's no reason the franchise won't reach Part 10.
