8 Films That Were Made Solely To Hold Onto Rights
1. Hellraiser: Revelations
Hellraiser: Revelations has to be the most blatant example of a movie being produced so the producers could hold onto a franchise. After Dimension Films ran the original series into the ground with awful straight to DVD sequels, they attempted to get a remake going. After years of scripts and director's being rejected, they suddenly realised their rights were about to expire, and they had to make something ASAP.
Hence, Revelations. The film was given a tiny budget and shooting schedule, and original Pinhead actor Doug Bradley was so appalled by the script he refused to be a part of it. The film was shot and wrapped in a matter of weeks and tossed onto DVD a short while later.
Even by the low standards set by some of the other sequels, the film is rancid, and Hellraiser creator Clive Barker took to Twitter to disown it. He stated “If they claim it’s from the mind of Clive Barker, it's a lie. It's not even from my b***-hole."
Another sequel subtitled Judgement – directed by the same screenwriter as Revelations – is due in 2017.
