6. Clear Rivers - Final Destination

Adapted from an X-Files spec script, the first Final Destination (2000) offered the kind of promise that subsequent entries have been sure to stamp out. Namely, a survivor.

The apparently unironically named Clear Rivers (Ali Larter) is the protagonist and final girl of the first film, and final survivor of the fatal and fatalistic Flight 180 that kicks off death's big ol' game of catch-up. The only female character to last the duration of the film (and the only character bar one), Clear slips death's cold embrace a number of times and mistakenly believes she's got the reaper bested, before the film closes on one final kill.

By the time the sequel rolls around, a single year later, Clear has confined herself to a psychiatric ward for insulation from death's tricks and traps, reeling from the off-screen ending of the only other survivor Alex (Devon Sawa). Alas, to her detriment she agrees to join a new band of death-fugitives who are, in the twist of twists, being killed in reverse order.

But death isn't one to be cheated twice, and smites Clear off the face of the earth with a well-timed gas explosion, killing one of the new batch of survivors to boot.
