8 Most God-Awful Movie Superheroes Not Based On Existing Material

8. Zebraman - Zebraman (2004)

Zebraman When in doubt, pick an animal that Marvel hasn't managed to do anything with yet and run with it for your new superhero movie. That's what Takashi Miike did when he conjured up Zebraman, who is - as you probably guessed - a crime-fighting superhero who dresses up sort of like a zebra and takes to the streets, dispensing justice like it's going out of style. Okay, so Takashi Miike is a nutcase and his intentions here were mostly playful, but the film - embracing a Power Rangers-like aesthetic - and Zebraman himself end up feeling a bit naff. This isn't helped by the fact that the villain of the movie is called Crabman. Oh, and there are aliens, too, for some reason (hey, it's Japanese - what did you expect?). The most jarring thing about Zebraman, though, lies in its tonal shifts: it's hard to know how to feel about absolutely anything that's happening on-screen, and it makes for one wholly unsatisfying viewing experience. Miike, of course, remains a master filmmaker and there are occasional flashes of inspiration, but Zebraman doesn't really work as a spoof or as a straight superhero exercise.
