Directed by Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, The Apu Trilogy (1955-1959) is a series of films detailing the childhood, dreams and young adult life of Apu, a young, free-spirited Bengali boy who grows up in a poor family and must deal with the hardships life throws his way.

From the death of various members of his family to the ups and downs of his education, the films serve as a sweeping coming-of-age drama.

Each film is reported to have cost the equivalent of $3000 at the time of their production, and have since gone on be regarded as three of the greatest films ever made, as well as one of the best achievements in Indian cinema and an historically important landmark in cinematic history.

Moving, enchanting and stunning in its simplicity, the trilogy is a must-watch for any fan of cinema, or the filmmaking process.
