8 Great Films Made On A Shoestring Budget
5. One Cut Of The Dead
The most recent film on the list, One Cut for the Dead (2017) was directed by Shin'ichiro Ueda on a small budget equivilant to $25,000. The Japanese comedy horror follows the cast and crew of a budget horror movie who find themselves face-to-face with a real-life zombie apocalypse.
Currently holding a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, One Cut for the Dead was a massive critical and commercial success, with particular praise going to its humour and inventive structure. With striking originality and a brilliantly filmed one-shot take that takes up the bulk of the movie, the zombie comedy was mostly funded through crowdfunding and made over $30 million at the worldwide box office.
The film was made with a limited crew and took four months to edit out all the imperfections, but there's no doubt it was time and effort well spent, and a sequel was added to YouTube during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
