8 Great Movie Musicals To Watch This Holiday Season

2. Chicago

Watch With: Your sister. Released just a year after Moulin Rouge, 2002's Chicago is another movie which rejuvenated the movie musical as a genre. It can also lay claim to being the first musical to win Best Film at the Academy Awards since 1969's Oliver! Based on Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb's stage musical of the same name, Chicago follows the lives of two accused murderers Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta Jones) and Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) and their unscrupulous lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere). Featuring evocative musical numbers and perfectly articulating its themes of fame, greed and immorality, Chicago was critically lauded upon its release in 2001 and has remained popular ever since. Watching Chicago feels like watching a Broadway or West End show. The Fosse choreography is wonderfully executed and its three leads are perfectly cast. In 2002, Zellweger was best-known for her role as down-on-her-luck British singleton Bridget Jones, for which she had been Oscar-nominated the year before. Her performance as Roxie Hart was a complete contrast and was widely acclaimed. Zeta Jones is stunning as Velma Kelly and recently wowed audiences at this year's Academy Awards by performing her character's signature song 'All That Jazz' during the ceremony. Fun, cynical and exciting Chicago is a classic movie musical and the ideal film to watch over Christmas.
