8 Great Movies Told By Liars
3. The Usual Suspects
Considering we're told a story that's instantly stated to be from the perspective of a deceptive criminal, the big stinger of this movie should have been clear from the outset - but hey, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Back when Kevin Spacey wasn't cancelled, The Usual Suspects presented us with Verbal Kint, a mild man with cerebral palsy. He's involved with a gang of criminals attempting to pull off a boat heist to clear what they owe to a mysterious debtor, Keyser Soze, and is one of only two to survive the botched job. Kint is taken in for questioning, framing the film around his flashback to the events that got him arrested.
By the end of the film, Kint has given us a riveting, believable story - that is, until you start to notice that the details of his narrative have been pulled from his immediate surroundings, like naming a lawyer after the brand of mug the police officer is drinking from. That he's not really disabled also gives it away a bit.
It all makes sense in one blinding strike of epiphany, as the film itself is revealed to be as enamoured with Kint's story as the detectives are, and we've all been taken in by the grand Keyser Soze by the end. But that's exactly the kind of trick this grandmaster criminal would pull.
