8 Great Movies Told By Liars
2. Shutter Island
The whole point of Martin Scorsese's wonderfully dark neo-noir thriller is to present us with a film that isn't what it pretends to be on the surface, slowly unravelling all its tightly wound threads to a surprise ending that really does come out of nowhere. Initially following detective Teddy Daniels to a psychiatric facility on Shutter Island, we watch as he attempts to solve a missing persons case despite being treated with contempt by the staff - navigating the complex case as a storm prevents him from leaving back to the mainland.
As it turns out, our intense and brooding protagonist isn't quite the robust young detective the film would have us believe, and is actually a patient on the island allowed to play out his delusions in an attempt to make him connect back with reality. Teddy is an arsonist and has fallen for his own lie, which is then used as a lens to play Shutter Island through for the audience in turn.
Clues lie scattered throughout the story, but one of the most smirk worth is 'we haven't heard the truth once yet' uttered by Teddy himself early on - and clevely seeded in the trailers. No, we haven't Teddy, have we?
