8 Great Sci-Fi Movies With Only One Main Character (Most Of The Time)

7. Moon (2009)

Under The Skin Scarlett Johansson
Sony Pictures Classics

Moon, the debut feature from British director Duncan Jones, is a highly decorated, critically lauded science fiction movie that deserves to be remembered as one of the best of the past couple of decades. But, despite all the accolades, it still feels very much like a cult film.

In the near future, on a helium-3 mining station on the moon, Sam Bell (played by Sam Rockwell) is nearing the end of his contract. But after losing contact with Earth, he slowly begins to question his reality. It's gripping stuff.

The modestly built sets and subtle special effects are simply stunning and go a long way to perfecting Jones' world, but it's the leading man's performance that really sells the story.

Rockwell's interactions with robot companion GERTY (unnervingly voiced by Kevin Spacey), are particularly memorable, especially as their relationship becomes more and more fraught, but even when alone on screen, it's a performance that holds your attention.
