1. Bickering Brother And Sister From Lady In The Water
Character Names: Vick Ran, Anna Ran Actor Names: M. Night Shyamalan, Sarita Choudhury Okay, back off. I will admit that the worst actor in a M. Night Shyamalan movie is M. Night Shyamalan, just as the worst actor in a Quentin Tarantino movie is Quentin Tarantino and the worst actor in a Spike Lee flick is Spike Lee. The common company doesn't excuse his poor performances but at least we can stop singling him out as the only director who stinks up his own films. Yet we should also be ready, in the rare instance a director gives a good performance, to give credit where credit is due. M. Night Shyamalan's performance in Lady In The Water is deserving of much credit. However there is a slight catch. It's a performance that only works in tandem. By his lonesome playing "world changing" author Vick Ran he falls flat. Pared with the actress who plays his sister Anna Ran (Sarita Choudhury) he soars. The brother sister dynamic they portray is so nuanced and accurate that its a marvel. Anyone who has ever had a close relationship with their sister or brother will be find a special resonance in their performances. The sly way they tease each other (the laundry scene is hilarious) and care for one another is not only sweet but a great example of naturalistic screen acting. Special kudos goes to Sarita Choudhury the girl who plays sister to M. Night's character in the film. With M. Night or without him, she is a marvel in the picture.
