8 Horror Movie Fan Theories That Make The Films Even Creepier

5.Eugene Is Billy From Black Christmas -Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon

Behind the Mask Rise of Leslie Vernon
Anchor Bay Entertainment

Behind The Mask is an incredible blend of satire and straight-up horror, taking its cues on how to blend the two genres from Wes Craven's equally balanced Scream franchise. As the title implies, this movie goes "behind the scenes" using a mockumentary format to show how our favourite, violent psychopaths target their victims and execute seemingly supernatural acts.

The stand-in for Freddy, Jason, and the rest of the traditional slasher villains (who actually exist in the world of this film, by the way) is Leslie Vernon, an up-and-comer in the teen murder game. With some assistance from veteran slasher villain and friend, Eugene, who possesses boundless knowledge on the various methods of killing teenagers.

The Theory: Eugene isn't just an old pro, he's one of the very first slasher villains. Presented as a man who cut his teeth in the business even before guys like Michael Myers came around, Eugene is actually Billy from Black Christmas.

If you know your horror movie history, Black Christmas is widely credited as being one of the very first slasher films, and originated the idea of the serial killer just disappearing at the end, with the audience unsure of his actual identity. All we knew of the killer in that movie is that he called himself Billy and was literally able to get away with murder. Who better to be the Obi-Wan to Leslie Vernon's Luke?
