8 Horror Movie Sequels Everyone Thought Would Suck But Didn't
Curse Of Chucky never had a chance...
A sequel is both exciting and terrifying to those making it and those awaiting its release.
It gives you the chance to right any wrongs from the previous installments, expand the world of the movie's universe and build upon what has happened previously.
If what came before was pure garbage, however, then excitement instantly turns to worry. Be it a franchise that has long gone past its prime, or simply a bad movie inexplicably getting to continue a story nobody wanted to see continued, some sequels are victims of prejudice long before they hit theatres from viewers expecting diminishing returns.
Never is this more prevalent than in the horror genre, where movies can be made quick and cheap, and franchises stretch out a premise to insane lengths over decades.
Friday the 13th had Jason Voorhees traveling to outer space and becoming an android in its 10th outing for crying out loud.
Most of the time audiences are right on the money when they spot a doomed sequel, but then there are movies that upset the established order and pleasantly surprise everyone by being worth watching. Films that escape the stigma of what came before to give people a satisfying horror experience, and offer them hope for the future once more.
These are 8 of those such films that are well worth your time to seek out for a night of scares on the sofa, no matter what the quality of the other installments in the series may suggest.
8. Ouija: Origin Of Evil (2016)
If you told people just after watching Oujia that the sequel was going to be one of the best horror films of 2016, a year bursting with stunningly scary movies, they would have laughed in your face.
The first film was a dumpster fire of a horror flick, scoring an abysmal 6% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was about as much fun as actually watching people sitting around a table staring a ouija board for 80 minutes straight.
However, it made a sweet $95 million profit and so a prequel was put into development. No one was ready for just how effective this horror film would be.
Abandoning any relation to the previous entry, this Ouija film focusses on a family that cons people by hosting fake seances. The youngest daughter unintentionally invites a spirit into their home and spooky hijinks ensue.
The film is a lot more mature than the first entry with a focus on making the family feel believable, and the dramatic moments really work because of this. The direction is also expertly handled with a dreaded tone slowly suffocating the movie and frightening dark cinematography filling the screen.
Then there are the scares, and this film gives you your money's worth as there is a slew of terrifying moments to be found in this sequel with spine-tingling suspense and genuinely disturbing imagery.
Oujia 2 is not only better than the original it's one of the most improved movie sequels of all time.
