8 Horror Movie Villains You Can’t Help But Sympathise With

7. Esther - Orphan

Orphan Movie
Warner Bros.

Orphan sees The Coleman family adopt a relatively reserved, but equally charming, girl named Esther from an orphanage in their town.

From the get-go though it's clear that something is not right with the kid. Whether it be the 'accidents' that appear to constantly follow her, or her inappropriately extensive knowledge of sex, mother Kate and her two children Max and Daniel are fully aware of the odd behaviour that Esther appears to be brimming with.

The almost laughable, yet completely unexpected, twist that defines this movie is revealed in the final act. Esther turns out to be a fully grown woman with an extremely rare condition that makes her physical appearance child-like.

She is therefore unable to make meaningful connections with other adults the same age as her, and over the years has grown resentful towards this fact. Potentially going a step too far however, is pretending to be an actual child in order to seduce the fathers of the families that she has been adopted by. We can understand how difficult a life like that can be, but girl please. Stop doing that. It's weird.

A truly strange twist that left everyone reeling (not to mention a little bit angry and a little bit in stitches) also made us slightly sympathetic toward Esther, because at the end of the day, who doesn't want to just get on with life and be happy? We know Esther definitely does. And would be willing to kill to get what she wants.
