8 Horror Movies Built On A Lie
6. Resident Evil: Retribution
Perhaps bending this concept a little more than most, Resident Evil: Retribution is making this list as perhaps the most underseen and underloved fifth sequel in a film series. A very specific accolade, but one I'm handing out all the same.
Whilst the whole Resident Evil series is based on the lie of taking a video game title and spinning out a film series that feels entirely unrelated, Retribution comes top of the pile for creating a world comprised of simulations. Alice and her zombie-busting pals find themselves stuck in an underground facility designed to play out the effects of the T-Virus in public spaces, with grand imaginings of infected cities like Tokyo and Moscow standing between them and their escape.
This is a film that celebrates its fakery and visual lies at every turn, and dives into all sorts of strange subplots to throw viewers off before revelling in the batsh*t insane concept to the fullest degree.
Perhaps the biggest lie this film is built on is that it's just a big dumb action horror movie with very little to offer. Questions of identity, facsimile, and reality all colliding with Milla Jovovich in bondage gear? Why not!?
