5. The Gift
Quite the literal movie built on a lie, The Gift wouldn't exist at all had central character and grade A d*ck Simon not toyed with the truth when he was younger. A psychological thriller that uses a new, subtler shade of horror, The Gift's premise revolves around a man haunted by his mistakes - but so desperate to not admit them that he loses everything in the process.
Late on in The Gift, we learn that Simon lied about Gordo - a boy attending the same school as he was - for no real reason other than spite. Telling everyone he was molested by another boy, Gordo was relentlessly bullied and attacked by his own bigot father, resulting in the rest of his life spiralling out of control.
The Gift is Gordo's revenge for the pain he didn't deserve, and at each turn Simon tries to hide the truth of his actions to preserve the comfortable life he's built up. That's the thing with a web of lies though, it's all too easy to get tangled up in it...
