Zack Snyder took George A. Romero’s consumerist social commentary disguised as a zombie movie and turned it into something a bit more accessible. Although once again taking place in a shopping mall, Snyder doesn’t lay the themes on quite so thick. Instead, he opts for an entertaining thrill ride that is as much blockbuster as it grindhouse. With such an approach, Snyder managed to target an entirely different and significantly wider audience than that of Romero’s version.

The zombie apocalypse sub-genre had not been an ‘event’ movie until Snyder’s film was released. Whether for better or for worse, since 2004, they have been common place on the summer blockbuster schedule, with films such as I Am Legend, World War Z, and Zombieland having the commercial and even critical success of Dawn of the Dead to thank for their 'lifeless' existence.
