8 Horror Remakes That Became Classics In Their Own Right

5. Cape Fear (1991)

Dawn Of The Dead 2004
Universal Pictures

Although not a horror film in the traditional sense, the terrifying performance from Robert De Niro is as scary as any movie monster you’ll ever see. De Niro plays an ex-con stalking an average American family, in a more grounded scenario than we’re used to seeing in the genre, which as a result, hits home a lot harder.

Martin Scorsese directs outside his comfort zone in his first foray into horror, but handles the material with restraint, employing a slow burn approach that makes the exhilarating finale on Cape Fear all the more explosive.

Despite not being considered one of his best films (understandable with Taxi Driver and Goodfellas on his resume), it is still one of the best remakes ever with some scenes becoming so iconic that they’re regularly referenced in pop culture: never more brilliantly than in The Simpsons episode ‘Cape Feare’.
