8 Huge Captain America: Civil War & Doctor Strange Reveals From D23

7. Doctor Strange Sounds Insane (In A Good Way)

Benedict Cumberbatch wasn't able to be at D23 because he's busy with Hamlet in London, but he appeared in a recorded video message to jokingly promise fans that Doctor Strange will be all about, "Girls, cars, explosions, and astral projections into multiple universes; The usual fare." That was followed up with a test reel of concept art - the movie doesn't start shooting until much later this year - which emphasised the fact that this might just be the most bizarre and unique Marvel movie to date. What was shown confirmed that Doctor Strange will feature the character's classic origin story; he'll be a wounded surgeon who winds up in a mystical Eastern sanctuary as he looks for a way to heal his hands. It was mentioned that S.H.I.E.L.D. have been monitoring since before that. Why exactly that is wasn't made clear, but that would link up to him being named in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The reel also confirmed reports that Chiwetel Ejiofor is playing Baron Mordo, while Tilda Swinton has been cast as The Ancient One (more on that in a bit). As for the action, the Astral Plane sounds like nothing ever seen before in a superhero movie, with "cars levitated into the air; buildings turning over Inception-style" and "bizarre otherworldly dimensions" made up of "insane colours." Oh, and director Scott Derrickson teased plans to introduce some pretty freaky creatures in the movie as well!
