8 Important Lessons From The Films of 2012

4. Character Study Can Be Just as Exciting as a Shootout - The Master

Some are claiming that Paul Thomas Anderson's movie is the best he's yet come out with, and I have to say that I share the sentiment. And some of those people also state that it's also a film in which absolutely nothing happens. And while I'm not leaning towards that extreme, a case can be made that this character study of a movie is an absolute joy to watch, particularly because of leads in Phoenix and Hoffman. Phoenix's could easily be one of the finest performances in the past fifty years, with a complete embodiment into the crazed, manic, and easily impressionable Freddie Quell, who's sexual endeavors and quick-temper provide for some of the most memorable moments in the 137 minute feature. And, yes, in comparison to There Will Be Blood and Magnolia, this is a smaller, more intimate film. But Anderson directs and his actors act as if it's the only movie to have come out this year. It's vigorously exciting and enthralling and absolutely worth your dollar. This is a "talkie" well worth your shutting up.

Cameron Carpenter is an aspiring screenwriter, current film and journalism student, and self-diagnosed cinephile, which only sounds bad in certain circles. Devoted fan of comics, movies, theater, Jesus Christ, Sidney Lumet, and Peter O'Toole, he sometimes spends too much time on his Scribd and comicbookmovie.com, but doesn't think you're one to judge, devoted reader. You can follow him on Twitter to watch him talk to people you didn't know exist. Oh, and Daredevil is quite the big deal around here (my head).
