8 Important Lessons From The Films of 2012

3. Great Ambition is Still in Need of a Good Marketing Team - John Carter

I had the privilege to see John Carter in 3D IMAX with my girlfriend, and we both sat there, jaws agape, enjoying the epic scope of the film. And I know this and Cloud Atlas seem to be the love-it-or-hate-it movies of the year, but I had a fantastic time watching Carter and could easily have seen it grabbing an enormous audience... if people had known it existed. By now, we've all seen how things worked out for the Andrew Stanton helmed film (hint - it wasn't a smash hit). It became the very definition of a flop, which is truly saddening for a movie with so much franchise potential. So, let it be known that in order for a movie to truly be successful, it must be seen. You can still help out John Carter by renting it. It certainly has my blessing for any sequels, as long as it keeps its scale.

Cameron Carpenter is an aspiring screenwriter, current film and journalism student, and self-diagnosed cinephile, which only sounds bad in certain circles. Devoted fan of comics, movies, theater, Jesus Christ, Sidney Lumet, and Peter O'Toole, he sometimes spends too much time on his Scribd and comicbookmovie.com, but doesn't think you're one to judge, devoted reader. You can follow him on Twitter to watch him talk to people you didn't know exist. Oh, and Daredevil is quite the big deal around here (my head).
