burton robin header Tim Burton evidently hated the idea of having a Robin in his movie. Screenwriter Daniel Waters, who wrote Batman Returns, said that
One of our big bonding issues is me and Tim Burton hate Robin. He's just the most worthless character in the world, especially with Tim's conception of Batman as the loner of loners, to have this gushing boy run around, it made us both kind of sick to our stomachs!
Regardless of whether or not you agree with that statement, however, the question of how Tim Burton would have handled the Boy Wonder is interesting. Evidently, his origin was meant to be in the 1989 Batman movie at one point, the scene where he was introduced even making it into the storyboards! Below, you can see a version of it put together with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill providing voices to the character. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BknHApJ6e0 Potentially even more alluring, however, the next photo gives us a glimpse into the unproduced third Tim Burton Batman movie! Reportedly, the design was supposed to be what Robin would look like in that installment. burton robin 2 According to acclaimed artist Neal Adams, he actually also designed a version of Robin's costume for Warner Brothers to use in a film in 1990: "after a few designs I came up with what I think is the key important design to the Robin costume, and that is that the cape is yellow on the inside and black on the outside." If that sounds familiar, that's no coincidence - the design was later used for the next Robin in the comics, Tim Drake, the idea being that the new costume would help him could blend in with Batman at night. burton robin final
