8 Incredibly Devoted Instances Of Method Acting That The World Ignored

3. Jim Carrey - Man On The Moon (1999)

jim carrey man on the moon You know Jim Carrey best for making funny faces and being generally hyperactive, so what business did this guy have trying to be, like, a proper actor all the way back in 1999, before we had accepted that it was okay for him to do that? None, apparently, going by the box office receipts for Man on the Moon, Milo Forman's biopic of comedian Andy Kaufman. To prepare for his role as Kaufman, Carrey decided that he should just be Kaufman, so that's what he set out to do for the entirety of production: he opted to stay in character. All the time. Those of you who are familiar with the movie might be thinking, "Wait a minute... didn't ol' Jim win a Golden Globe for his performance in this?" You would be right in saying that, but how often do you hear anybody talk about Man on the Moon? When was the last time somebody brought it up? Carrey's performance may have been well-received, but the movie lost $40 million at the box office and received mixed reviews. So although Jim got some recognition for his turn, what we were basically saying was, "Do The Mask 2 or something instead."
