Of course, time travel is the name of the game, as there's nothing that gets mind's blowing more than a good old trip into the past, or the future, or the present, actually, since it's all one big glop of non-linear rummaging anyway. In The Fountain, that time hopping is taken to the extreme, following a man attempting to dissect love and mortality across three lifetimes whilst bound to the woman he loves. If that doesn't sound too hard to follow, let's add that it's a Darren Aronofsky film, and he gets very Darren Aronofsky, because of course he does.

Visually mesmerising, The Fountain depicts a conquistador attempting to find the tree of life, a scientist attempting to cure a brain tumour, and a space traveller looking to the future. Each comes with its own struggles and outcomes, and whilst the film feels somewhat self-indulgent, the speculation and intrigue it offers up throughout is enchanting to watch.

Does love really span all space and time? Probably not, but a solid drink of tree sap will keep it going at the very least.
