We all know the absurdity of Stanley Kubrick by now - whether it's making a gang of jock-strap wearing, milk-drinking thugs or sending Jack Nicholson round the bend in a haunted hotel, his back catalogue of work has continually proven to be either a treasure trove or a minefield for artistic expression, leaving a series of convulsing film students in his wake with each bizarre release. And of course, 2001: A Space Odyssey sits right at the top of that weird and wonderful pile.

What does it all really mean? Well, there's thousands of books, essays, and rambling YouTubers committed to unravelling that very question - but the fact of the matter is it's almost impenetrable on first viewing due to the sheer visual nature of the piece.

Whether it's watching a bunch of primates praise a giant piece of jenga, or seeing a big old space baby float through the stars, the interpretive nature of one of the most influential pieces of film history has remained boggling as ever for first-time watchers. There's so much to be read in between the lines that the lines don't even matter anymore.
