8 Little Known Nuances That Made Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Awesome

1. She Uses Sexuality As A Weapon

It was always a prerequisite that the movie version of Harley Quinn be played by a physically attractive actress, of course, though Margot Robbie gave a terrifically unhinged performance on top that ensured she was cast for doubly the right reasons.

And despite the film's restrictive PG-13 rating, Harley's sexuality is a major facet of her character.

Primarily, she uses her attractiveness as a weapon to toy with just about anyone who gives her a second glance - especially if they see that "Lucky you" tattoo - flirting playfully with Belle Reve's security in her cell as though playing a sexy Hannibal Lecter, for example.

She uses her looks throughout the film to disarm the men surrounding her, as evidenced by the ridiculous undressing scene (pictured above), which turns every male in the vicinity into a slack-jawed yokel.

This feeds into a wider aspect of Harley's character, that she's constantly underestimated for her physical appearance, lithe and slight though it is, even if Harley proves herself a powerful and violent criminal like any other member of the Squad.

It'll be interesting to see how the character's sex appeal is treated in Birds of Prey, however, which is being written, directed and produced by women, and according to Robbie is aiming to be "less male gaze-y." Right on.
