Suicide Squad is not much for subtle storytelling, but it does introduce a minor wrinkle to Harley's character that says a lot about her and J's toxic relationship without needing to actually speak much aloud at all.

During Harley and The Joker's encounter with Batman (Ben Affleck) early in the film, Harley screams to J that she can't swim, yet he crashes the car regardless.

Not only is he aware that she can't swim, but he also knows that she'll most certainly be saved by the Caped Crusader, allowing him to make a neat escape.

But as is typical of a toxic relationship, Harley gives J the excessive benefit of the doubt, assuming that he isn't aware of her inability to swim despite the Ace Chemicals flashback sequence clearly proving otherwise.

In this scene, The Joker dives into the chemical vat to retrieve Harley after coaxing her to dive in moments prior, scarcely saving her from drowning.

Between The Joker's rather casual attitude to Harley's safety and Harley's misguided belief that he deeply cares about her, these exchanges are a perfect summation of everything both fascinating and problematic about Harley and J's relationship.
