8 Magical Movies That Turned Out Unsettling

7. The NeverEnding Story - The Swamps Of Sadness

The NeverEnding Story is an '80s classic that has proven to be one of the most well-loved family films of all time.

Detailing the adventure of a boy named Bastian as he fully immerses himself in the magical book known mysteriously as "The Neverending Story".

The book follows Atreyu, a young warrior embroiled in the attempt to stop the Nothing, a darkness that threatens to engulf the world of Fantasia.

While on paper it sounds like a fantastical and magical adventure for children to embark upon, the reality is that The NeverEnding Story contains a level of despair that was so unsettling it still makes adults cry.

If you've seen it, you'll know exactly which scene causes such a visceral reaction: the Swamps of Sorrow.

Atreyu has been travelling with his best friend and beloved horse, Artax, and when the pair encounter the Swamps of Sorrow it seems as though they are in for a challenge.

They are, but not the challenge we might have expected. Artax begins slowly sinking into the swamp, and Atreyu pulls madly at his reins, trying to free his companion. Nothing the boy does works, and he says a tearful, emotional goodbye to Artax.

If you're watching this scene, make sure to have tissues at the ready.
