8 Magical Movies That Turned Out Unsettling
6. Maleficent - Wing Removal
The story of Sleeping Beauty is known universally as one of the all time greatest fairy tales, and most of us grew up watching Disney's animated version of the tale.
When it was announced that Angelina Jolie would be starring in Maleficent, told from the point of view of the antagonist of Sleeping Beauty, reactions were mixed as to how good the movie could possibly be.
Instead of rehashing the same story, Maleficent gives us the opportunity to see it through the eyes of someone else, instead portraying King Stefan as the villain and Maleficent as Sleeping Beauty's magical saviour.
It's an interesting take on the tale, and it's filled with magic and mythical creatures co-existing in a beautifully rendered CGI world.
The opening scenes of the film depict the blossoming love between Maleficent and Stefan as children, until Stefan is corrupted by his lust for power and turns on his love, drugging her before cutting her wings from her back.
The act itself is unsettling enough, but watching as Maleficent wakes in agony and feels for her missing wings is enough to ensure that any children watching would be scarred for life.
