8 Miscast Movie Roles That Received A Bizarre Amount Of Praise

5. Mark Hamill - Star Wars

It's entirely understandable that some people will be irked by Mark Hamill's inclusion on this list, but think about it for a moment. Mark Hamill is an icon - amongst movie fans, he probably has one of the most recognisable faces in the industry. This stems, of course, from the fact that he's Luke Skywalker, the character who serves as pretty much an audience surrogate within the Star Wars universe - we envision that we're Luke. Thing is, Luke Skywalker is a massive dork. And yet the magic of the Star Wars movies has allowed Luke (and Hamill) to rise above all that, though. And let's face it: Hamill isn't really an actor. Sure, he's okay and he does the job, but when you actually think about the fact that Luke Skywalker is the main character of the series - boring, whiny, personality-less Luke Skywalker - you realise that we're letting the character off the hook. Because there's so much stuff to enjoy about Star Wars, we don't really notice that Luke's a total drip (besides, we have Han, too). Mark Hamill is, fundamentally, miscast in his role as Luke Skywalker - not in the first movie, perhaps, but as he learns to become a Jedi... absolutely. Hamill can't play heroic and stoic - he's forever stuck as the whiny kid forever. It's a problem. The Praise: Well, nobody really ever says anything bad about Mark Hamill or Luke Skywalker purely because of their association with the classic trilogy. He also won two Saturn Awards for his performances in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
