8 Moments In Back To The Future That Could Have Been VERY Different

7. Time Machine Fridge

The DeLorean car from the Back To The Future franchise has become one of the most recognisable vehicles of film history. The spaceship type four-wheeler passes through time at 88mph, leaving a special effects fire trail behind it. In early concepts of the movie however, the time machine was initially to be a fridge.

In the first draft, Doc Brown searches for a chemical ingredient for his latest invention. Just like the movie, Brown steals the plutonium from a power plant but still needs more energy. Marty accidentally spills Coca-Cola into the machine and it begins to work - modern-day commercial technology at its finest.

Inside the fridge, Marty hides from the Nuclear Regularity Agency who shoots the professor, causing the machine to activate and McFly to appear in 1952 (later changed to 1955) and begins his mission to save his parents marriage.

Although the fridge concept made it quite far into drafts of the film, all agreed with Gale and Zemeckis that the use of the kitchen appliance could promote children to lock themselves in their own fridges at home. This was changed, and the search for the futuristic car began.
