8 Moments That Almost Killed Star Wars

3. The End Of LucasArts

For many Star Wars fans LucasArts was home to some of the best video games ever made. This was not only the production company responsible for creating Star Wars games - it was also home to some of the best games produced in the late-1990s and beyond.

LucasArts produced some incredible games outside the franchise, including Maniac Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island, and Grim Fandango, to name a few. For Star Wars, the studio and publisher churned out massive hits, including Rebel Assault, X-Wing, Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and many more.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, the deal included its subsidiaries, and LucasArts was one of them. Unfortunately, an injection of cash wasn't on the horizon, and instead, the studio was closed in 2013. Did this kill Star Wars? No, but it destroyed one of the gaming industry's most beloved studios and set Star Wars down a path of mediocrity for much of the 2010s as far as gaming was concerned.

Fortunately, an announcement in 2021 confirmed the reestablishment of the Lucasfilm Games brand, but only time will tell if it will rekindle the company's past glory.
