8 Moments That Almost Killed Star Wars

2. Star Wars Battlefront II

The Battlefront games have long been celebrated and enjoyed by fans, so the announcement of Star Wars: Battlefront II elicited a great deal of excitement from gamers around the world. EA and DICE's 2015 reboot of the series released to lukewarm reviews but showed a great deal of promise, so all the signs were there that a sequel could finally deliver the potential of a truly next gen Battlefront.

Then it was released to widespread criticism. The game could have been amazing, but Electronic Arts were less interested in producing a quality game as they were cramming as many microtransactions as they could into it. Progression was initially locked behind random lootbox drops, which could of course be bought to bypass the grind completely.

Battlefront II hurt the Star Wars franchise as well as Electronic Arts' reputation. Ultimately, it didn't help build a lot of trust in the franchise's licensed games, even though DICE were able to redesign its progression system and ensure that Battlefront II ended up being a truly great Star Wars title.
