8 Most Horrifying Practical Film Effects (And How They Were Achieved)

6. The Melting Man - RoboCop

The Movie: Forget the awful remake €“ the 1987 original is the only RoboCop film worth talking about, and fulfils every film fan's base desire to witness brutal sci-fi justice.

The Effect: By far the most memorable (and gruesome - which that really is saying something) scene in RoboCop is the scene that sees evil henchman Emil Antonowsky lose control of his van, crash into a vat of toxic waste and begin to melt away. Mmm... appetizing. How They Did It: Make-up and prosthetics. A lot of both. Thankfully, the make-up and costume director Rob Bottin had plenty of experience in the field of creating melted flesh. The entire scene was done as an homage to a film he had previously worked on titled The Incredible Melting Man. Paul McCrane (the actor portraying Emil) was decked out in full-body foam and rubber prosthetics shaped to give the appearance it was melting. One of the most important details were the fingers, which appeared elongated and dripping. To top the scene off, McCrane's clothes were shredded in such a way that the majority of his body was concealed, allowing viewers to fill in their of hideous details. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FftEeQmuDWM
