8 Most Horrifying Practical Film Effects (And How They Were Achieved)

5. Rhodes Is Torn In Half - Day Of The Dead

The Movie: If you think The Walking Dead is gory, you really haven't seen anything; George Romero's Day Of The Dead is the closest you'll get (or ever want to get) to a real zombie apocalypse.

The Effect: Having abandoned his own men, Captain Rhodes runs into a bunch of starving zombies, and... you can guess what happens next. Hint: they tear his body in two like soft putty. How They Did It: Multiple fake bodies. Head of Special Effects Tom Savini created a rubber torso full of all kinds of guts and gooey tendrils, placing actor Joe Pilato so that it looks like the body is his. The flesh was soft enough that extras were able to tear it to shreds, severing the torso in two and enabling the amazing moment in which Rhodes' legs are dragged away in front of his very eyes. Crucially, fake blood capsules were burst inside the lower torso, creating the trail of crimson left behind by Rhode's legs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjikkKdnyck
