8 Most Horrifying Practical Film Effects (And How They Were Achieved)

4. Brundlefly - The Fly

The Movie: Ever wanted to feel genuinely sorry for a disgusting man/fly hybrid? Then Cronenberg's The Fly is the movie for you (you weirdo). It brilliantly balances Seth Brundles monstrosity with heart-breaking amounts of sympathy.

The Effect: The Brundlefly is the end product of Seth Brundle's transformation into a giant raisin (just kidding). Throughout the film we see Brundle's entire body slowly lose its humanity, from peeling flesh to bulging eyes. How They Did It: Brundle's gradual transformation over the course of the entire film was absolutely key to making the project work. What this meant was creating seven different 'stages' of the transformation process. With each stage the make-up and prosthetic work increased in complexity (as did the amount of the time Goldblum had to spend in the make-up chair). What begins as a simple skin rash becomes vastly more complex as the film progresses. By the end, Goldblum's entire face was covered in prosthetics, with a fake scalp applied to make it look as though he's losing his hair. At its peak this took up to five hours to apply. On top of that, a mix of honey, milk and eggs were used to produce Brundle's thick vomit during his transformation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH-8L1iZq20
