8 Most Hotly Anticipated 2016 Films (And Why They'll Be Disappointing)

2. Finding Dory

What It Is: Finding Dory is a sequel to Pixar's 2003 Finding Nemo, centring on the forgetful character Dory and her quest to be reunited with her family. Why It'll Be Disappointing: "Centring on the forgetful character Dory". That's the film's first stumbling block. For a start, bit characters exist for a reason. Sidekicks work as support for the main character, both helping and hindering their progress, but generally remaining humorous and loveable throughout. There have been various attempts throughout the history of film to transplant sidekick character into main roles, and very few of them have succeeded. But Dory has an even bigger hurdle to overcome €“ she's an inherently annoying character. Sure, we love her, but her stupidity switches repeatedly between frustrating and endearing, and only manages to work because she isn't the focus of the movie. In films, extreme stupidity frustrates the audience, because they can't relate to the thought process involved (an example being when Dory is leading Nemo's father Marlin in the direction of the boat and keeps forgetting what she's doing). If Pixar changes Dory's penchant for extreme forgetfulness in order to try and make her work in her own movie, it'll be completely nonsensical and a betrayal of the character. But if they don't, they're going to have an impossibly difficult task of keeping her from getting annoying. It's highly likely that Pixar will employ a combination of both, flagging up her forgetfulness when the plot requires it and slipping it into the background when it causes problems, but that just isn't a very good foundation for Pixar's typically strong writing.
