Tony made a great many mistakes throughout his life, one of which was Ultron. His AI was supposed to put a suit of armour around the world and protect it from the likes of Thanos, lurking in the shadows of outer space. Instead however, Ultron became the greatest threat the Avengers had ever faced at the time.

The megalomaniacal android came with the goal of, not just killing the Avengers, but making them extinct. He was disgusted by Tony Stark and his hero friends, and wanted to rid the world of them entirely.

Part of his plan was to house himself within an impenetrable vibranium body with the Mind Stone embedded in the forehead. As seen in What If…?, this would have seen him conquer the multiverse for a short time, but thanks to the Avengers, he was stopped in his tracks.

Instead of becoming a being capable of destruction the likes of which the MCU had never seen, and instead of annihilating the Avengers, he essentially gifted Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with their strongest ever member at the time, and the one that would ultimately deliver the final blow against Ultron himself.
