Harvey Dent's turn from White Knight to Dark Knight is the emotional backbone of Christopher Nolan's 2008 masterpiece, with his accidental death at the hands of Batman feeling both deserved and undeserved at the same time.

In one of the film's early scenes - which finds Bruce, Rachel, Natascha and Harvey discussing the identity of the Batman - Dent correctly predicts where his story is headed, with the line "you either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" summing up his arc perfectly.

In the eyes of the people, he does die a hero - a public servant who dedicated himself to cleaning up the streets of Gotham.

But Batman and Commissioner Gordon know the truth - he actually turned into a murderous villain, driven mad by the death of Rachel Dawes - a truth they chose to cover up, in order to cement Dent's legacy as a beacon of hope for Gotham to cling to.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
